Copenhagen: The City of Cycling

Hej! (That's Hi in Danish to you...)

I've been a terrible blogger of late *slaps wrists*. Making the move back to Cardiff for university seems to have kept me rather busy since I got back from visiting my friend Ellie in Copenhagen last weekend.

What with getting my new room exactly how I want it (see above) and catching up with all of my friends, I have to admit that writing up my weekend away got pushed down my list of priorities...but ta da, the final installment of my summer of travel blogs is here!

Friday 19th September 2014

After a traumatic experience in security at Stansted Airport (why they thought it was unreasonable for me to bring small (50ml) bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and a few beauty products for 3 nights away is beyond me - those liquid bags are NOT big enough), I was comfortably installed between two snoring men ready for the flight to Copenhagen. It was a relatively short flight and before I knew it we were touching down in Denmark!

I was expecting to have to navigate the metro system to Ellie's halls in Fasanvej so I went to buy a train ticket, fervently hoping that the lovely looking woman on the counter spoke English. Unbeknownst to me at the time, in the Danish language "vej" is pronounced "vi". I tried to phonetically pronounce the place I was headed to and asked for a ticket to "Fas-an-veg" - I'd like to send credit to the saleswoman because she managed not to laugh in my face!!

Anyway, ticket purchased successfully, I tried to navigate my way to the metro, only to find that I'd completely walked past Ellie in the arrivals section. She'd turned up to meet me as a surprise and had even brought a hand made sign and some pick and mix to greet me - what a sweetie!

We jumped on the metro to head to Ellie's place, which is like uni halls but it's full of exchange students studying in Copenhagen. When we got back everyone was super nice and welcoming! Ellie put on her 'domestic goddess' hat and cooked me dinner (pesto pork chops with sweet potato wedges and sweetcorn FYI - yum!) before we got ready to head out into town.

In Copenhagen, everyone cycles everywhere...and I mean everywhere - even to and from clubs and bars (perhaps not advisable in hindsight...the bruises that still reside on my calves a week later speak volumes)! I've never seen so many bicycles and cycle lanes in my life! So after pre-drinks a group of us grabbed the bikes and cycled to a club called Culture Box.

Saturday 20th September 2014

A cow on the roof!
The next morning...well...early afternoon...we met up with Harriet and cycled to Papirøen (Paper Town) where they have an warehouse full of street vendors selling all sorts of yummy food, like a street food market. You can read more about it here.

There was so much choice and we couldn't decide what to have so we got three meals and split them three ways - the perfect hangover cure!
Fish and chips with traditional sauce and toppings!
Spicy Chicken Tacos
Pad Thai
There was even time for a little home made gelato after our main course! Harriet and I both chose the chocolate and banana flavoured option whilst Ellie opted for a vanilla and chocolate combination.

When we'd eaten our fill, we jumped back on the bikes and cycled through Experimenatarium City. We came across a swing set hung from the balcony of one of the buildings which was pretty cool!

We also took quite a liking to the seagull statues that lined the front of the water.

Back on the bikes, we headed to Christiania. It's a rather interesting place, also known as Freetown Christiania.

It's a self-proclaimed autonomous society where the inhabitants pretty much create their own legislation, leading to the abundance of semi-legal marijuana being sold and consumed. They don't like you to take pictures there...

So that was a rather weird experience. If you'd like to read more about Christiania, you can here.

We then wandered into town for a look around the shops before heading to Nyhavn.

We then headed for Tivoli, an amusement park type place where you pay about £10 to get in and can then enjoy the park, the restaurants, the shows, rides and sometimes even concerts.

It just so happened that the evening we went to Tivoli, a radio station had put on a huge concert with a line-up of popular Danish musicians (including Christopher) and also, of all people, Jessie J!

So that was a pretty cool yet unexpected evening!

Sunday 21st September 2014

The sun came out for my last day in Copenhagen, so we headed to the park and to chill in the sunshine with some freshly made juice outside of the Glass Market(also known as Torvehallerne).

We then headed back to Ellie's halls for a girlie night in with some movies whilst the boys made homemade chicken wings, drank beer and watched American Football.

Monday 22nd September 2014

My weekend in Copenhagen ended relatively early on the Monday morning and I was back in the UK by 11am! Thanks for a lovely weekend Ellie!

Thanks for reading! I'm planning on keeping my feet firmly on UK soil for the time being, so expect more rambling about clothes, makeup, accessories and random purchases in the near future!

Until next time!
